William Petty (1737-1805) the 2nd Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquis of Lansdowne commemorated with an English Heritage Blue Plaque
Launch of “The House in Berkeley Square” by Maria Perry
The Lansdowne Club is delighted to announce that William Petty, the 2nd Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquis of Lansdowne was commemorated with an English Heritage Blue Plaque on Tuesday 28th October 2003. The plaque was unveiled by the current Lord Lansdowne at William Petty’s principle London residence, now the Lansdowne Club.
As Prime Minister, Shelburne was responsible for granting independence to the American Colonies. He supported complete religious equality, was in favour of Parliamentary and fiscal reform and was one of the earliest advocates of free trade. Such views were rather ahead of their time and consequently were not widely appreciated in the 18th century, but found admiration and respect amongst much of the intelligentsia. He became an important patron of the fine arts and filled his house with books and manuscripts later acquired by the British Museum. He also built up a famous collection of antique sculpture and employed the best architects for his residences: Lansdowne House was built to designs by Robert Adam and had interiors by George Dance. Shelburne and Benjamin Franklin drafted the Treaty of Paris in the Round Room, which remains intact today.
A History of the Lansdowne Club, entitled “The House in Berkeley Square”, has been written by Club Member and historian Maria Perry. The ‘House’ was a centre of government throughout the 19th century, before its more recent incarnation as the home of the Lansdowne Club. Maria Perry’s skilfully woven account tells the lively and compelling story of a remarkable and memorable building, the changing nature of society and the Club which is now, through astute and imaginative renovation, securing its future as part of our living heritage. Drawing on detailed, original research and beautifully illustrated throughout with over 150 photographs, paintings and engravings, The House in Berkeley Square is fascinating, informative and delightfully entertaining. Maria Perry will also be attending the event.
